How to get the look of your favorite kitchen style

The first thing to do when making plans to remodel a kitchen is to deciding what style you’d like. But with so many different parts in a kitchen and so many styles to choose from, it can be a challenge to know which style is best for you, and how to get it.

We’ve put together a list of the key elements you need to include in your kitchen remodel, depending on the style you choose.

Traditional

The traditional style is one of the most popular home décor styles, and it mixes comfort with classic designs. Here is how you can incorporate that into your kitchen design:

  • Cabinets – To get the traditional look, go for white painted cabinets and be sure to include some with glass front doors.
  • Floors – The most popular choice for flooring is to get hardwood floors, but the right tile also provides a traditional look.
  • Countertops – Beautiful granite countertops are most commonly used in a traditional style kitchen. The color you choose should complement the light cabinets but still add depth and warmth.

Contemporary

This style is all about minimalism – clean lines with little, if any ornate details. You don’t want anything too flashy, but you don’t want the space to be dull either.

  • Cabinets – You’ll want simple but sleek frameless cabinets with flat panel doors. Choosing dark wood is a popular choice, but you can also go with cabinets painted in cool whites, greys, and even blues.
  • Countertops – Keeping the minimalist theme, you’ll want countertops with little or no color or pattern variation. Quartz countertops are ideal, because they come in a wide variety of colors, like cobalt blue or bright red.
  • Hardware – Keep your hardware simple. Since long, clean lines are part of the contemporary style, sleek drawer and door handles finished in brushed nickel or stainless steel are a great choice.

Craftsman

The Craftsman style was first called the “Arts and Crafts Movement” because it used materials used by artisans and favored natural finishes and warm, earthy tones. The style was popular in the early 20th century and is coming back in style now. Here are some ideas to create a craftsman style kitchen:

  • Counters – Go for light granite or quartz countertops and avoid anything dark since they will make the space look more traditional.
  • Floors – Like the traditional kitchen, hardwood floors are the most commonly used in a craftsman kitchen. If you prefer tile, look for something that resembles (or is) natural stone.
  • Cabinets – The cabinets are the center of attention in the craftsman kitchen. You’ll want to look for something that looks like it could be an antique, but still relatively simple and functional. Oak, maple, or cherry cabinets are all great choices. Stained-glass front doors also work well with style.

Farmhouse

The farmhouse kitchen has become extremely popular in the last decade. The style is a mixture of industrial-style appliances with softer colored cabinets and décor. Here are a few must-haves for your farmhouse kitchen:

  • Cabinets – Your cabinets should be classic and straightforward, so a shaker cabinet is our go-to cabinet for farmhouse kitchens.
  • Backsplash – The typical farmhouse kitchen has white or gray subway tiles. However, you could do something more dramatic, like installing a brick backsplash or arranging your subway tiles into a herringbone pattern.
  • Sink – You can’t have a farmhouse kitchen without the big apron front sink. You can go with a classic white ceramic sink or switch it up with a stainless steel or copper sink to add a rustic element to the kitchen.

Mid-Century

Mid-century is a fun combination of traditional and modern design. There’s a lot of room to add your own style into this design, but you should include these elements if you’re looking for a truly mid-century look:

  • Counters – Laminate countertops are ideal for this trend. You can have fun and get the counters in virtually any color you can think of and still be on-trend.
  • Cabinets – You have to go with wood cabinets to fit into the mid-century design. Flat paneled would be best since the sleek, simple lines are essential to staying true to the look.
  • Backsplash – Your backsplash should be colorful and something out of the ordinary. Think geometric patterns or abstract patterns that draw the eye.
