Bedroom and Bathroom Addition with Deck, Maryland

Our clients asked T.W. Ellis to build an addition onto the back of their home, as well as complete some interior work in other areas of the existing structure. The addition involved extending the garage and carefully matching the new brick to the existing on the exterior wall. This extension allowed the master bedroom above the garage to be enlarged as well.

The plan included constructing a new second floor deck above the existing patio. Then the patio was updated by replacing the old dark pressure-treated boards with composite decking, adding easy-care vinyl railings, and wrapping the columns underneath for an attractive appearance. The final touch was to install a dry deck drain under the deck, to keep the patio dry during inclement weather.

Our clients now enjoy a spacious master suite with his-and-her walk-in closets and a walk-in shower. The spa-like bathroom features Music Room tile in Natural Charleston Brown on the walls and floor, with gorgeous Light Giallo ornamental granite for the vanity top and shower bench seats. Kingsley plumbing fixtures by Moen in a brushed nickel finish add the finishing touch to this elegant look. The master bath is also a real focal point inside and out because of its vaulted ceiling, skylights, and unusual triangular window.

For the purpose of energy savings, we insulated the bathroom and master closet floors, since they are located directly above an unheated garage. The walk-in closet also has a pull-down stairs that leads to a storage space above, which we heavily insulated. No cold draft will be coming through to that closet! We continued to utilize our clients' existing heating unit, while adding a Mitsubishi mini-split in their walk-in closet, opening a transfer grill that sends the air into the bathroom as well.

Our clients are thrilled with their new addition and updated home, and we at T.W. Ellis are tickled to have been given the opportunity to work with them on this home transformation.
