A Look at Popular Kitchen Trends for Summer ’23

A kitchen trend for backsplashes is to mix up the pattern and no just use white subway tiles

It’s hard to believe, but we’re quickly approaching the halfway point of 2023! At the end of last year, most industry experts predicted the kitchen trends 2023 would include mixed materials, open wall space, matte black, and a focus on sustainable living.

While those trends are holding steady, there are a couple of unexpected kitchen trends 2023 has brought on. Let’s look at what they are and how to add them to your kitchen remodeling project.

Kitchen Backsplash Trends for 2023

We just can’t quit the tile backsplash trend. Subway tiles have been popular for the last decade, but we continue moving away from the white and gray subway tile backsplashes into more abstract and colorful options.

If you have a more simplistic kitchen, installing a bold tile backsplash will be the perfect way to add some character. If you don’t want your backsplash to overwhelm the entire space, you could have a bold backsplash above your range paired with a complimentary but more simple tile on the other walls of your kitchen.

Another kitchen backsplash trend is to extend the granite or marble countertop slab up to the cabinets, which makes the space look luxurious.

Kitchens are Going Industrial

A more surprising trend we’ve seen this year is the industrial kitchen. While many homeowners are steering away from the open-concept home, the industrial-style kitchen doubles down on it.

An industrial kitchen has large, open spaces – some even have open shelving instead of cabinets or pantries. Everything is on display, and everything has its place. Some other essential elements of an industrial kitchen are exposed brick, neutral colors, and a balance of wood and metal materials.

Kitchen Flooring Trends for 2023

Finding a floor that is durable, easy to clean, matches the aesthetic of your space, and is on trend is no easy task. Fortunately, kitchen flooring trends don’t change as frequently as some of the other elements in a kitchen, so choosing a timeless flooring material like wide plank hardwood floors is always a popular choice.

Retro style is in throughout the home, and the kitchen is no different. Large checkerboard patterns are popular and work well with a midcentury modern kitchen. Natural stone like flagstone and travertine has also been on the wish list for many homeowners. This earthy material works well in a modern-style kitchen or can give a nice refresh to a farmhouse or traditional-style kitchen.

Make a Statement with Lighting

Kitchen lighting trends 2023 are all about making a statement. The kitchen lighting trends feature lighting that is the focal point or the starting point of the design, as opposed to the finishing touch.

We’ve moved beyond the jeweled chandeliers and onto classic silhouettes in matte black or natural tones. When it comes to the size of the lights in your kitchen – the bigger, the better. Small pendant lights are no longer the must-have. Instead, large chandeliers illuminating the entire room are the choice of designers and homeowners alike.

What trends do you want to see in your next kitchen? Which trends should go away? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
