The Importance of Planning Your Remodel: Building a Vision Board

a first step in planning your remodel, this couple is discussing possiblities

Vision boards have become very popular in the last few years as a way for people to visualize and manifest goals in all areas of their lives. The compilation of images, textures, words, and ideas you’d like to include in your home can be created digitally on apps like Pinterest or Canva or by simply gluing pictures and objects onto a poster board.

Using a vision board to organize your ideas and goals will be very beneficial in planning your remodel since you’ll already have a clear idea of your desired outcome. Of course, you might want to make changes along the way, but the vision board is a great springboard to get the project started. Here are some things to consider while you create your vision board:

Determine your goals

Before starting with your vision board, think about your goals for the remodel. Why do you want to go through the renovation process?

What problems are you trying to solve? How do you see the space being used once the remodel is complete? Answering these questions will help you focus on the project’s purpose and allow you to start organizing your thoughts.

Get creative when planning your remodel

Once you have a desired outcome in mind, start scrolling social media or flipping through home décor magazines. This is the fun part! Save pictures of spaces that you like without overthinking them.

There will be plenty of time to edit your ideas, but for now, anything goes! There’s a good chance you’ll notice a pattern in images that you save, and from that, you’ll be able to nail down a style or color scheme for your project.

Be specific

After you go through the initial free-for-all of saving every idea that catches your eye, narrow your ideas down to something more cohesive. You’ll want to consider the amount of space you have versus the ideas you saved.

You’ll also want to be more realistic about any bold or trendy pieces you may have been drawn to and decide if you would still enjoy them in your home a few years from now. Also, remember the practical pieces of a home remodel project, like appliances, to see how well they pair with the decorative items you have chosen.

Why is the vision board important?

You might be thinking that this sounds like a ton of extra work – but really, the vision board will ultimately save you time in the remodeling process. Instead of blankly staring at our design consultant when figuring out what features you’d like in the space, you’ll have ideas to share.

Plus, once you’re in the thick of the remodeling project – when many homeowners question why in the world they wanted to do this in the first place – you can look at your vision board to remind you that the outcome will be worthwhile.
