We may be in the midst of a cold, arctic freeze, but that doesn’t mean we can start daydreaming of springtime. What I’m looking forward to most is being able to sit on my deck while enjoying my morning coffee.
Believe it or not, now is the perfect time to start planning a new deck build or renovation. Adding a deck to your home will open up so many possibilities. It can be used as a sitting area, outdoor dining space, and even an outdoor kitchen! If you’d like some ideas, we’ve rounded up some of the best deck design ideas for 2023:
Natural Elements
The natural, earthy trend is not just for your home’s interior; it extends into the yard. Building a deck that embraces your natural surroundings and almost blends into the rest of the yard is something we will see a lot more of.
To create a natural deck that blends into its surroundings, you should incorporate warm wood tones and organic textures to make your deck seem like an outdoor oasis. If you can, work around existing trees and shrubbery. Trees will create a calming atmosphere – there is nothing like the sound of rustling leaves on a warm afternoon. Plus, building around trees can create natural shade, no need for an umbrella!
Enclose It
Having a deck space that is usable year-round sounds heavenly. Enclosing your deck space or building a new enclosed one will create another room in your home. Using a floor-to-ceiling glass slider will allow you to have unobstructed views of the outdoors while remaining warm and cozy inside. When the weather allows, you can open the slider to let the fresh air in.
Updated Lighting
Adding or updating your lighting is a must! Not only will it make your outdoor space seem more modern, but it can also be a safety issue too. Tripping while walking up or down the stairs or getting too close to the railing can be caused due to lack of lighting.
The lights that we expect to see most in 2023 are permanent, low-voltage fixtures. These will keep your deck safe while providing a more sustainable lighting option since they use less energy than other types of light bulbs. You can install them on your deck railing, and deck steps. In addition to illuminating your deck, this type of lighting can be used to accent features and brighten up walkways.
Add a Bar
Including a bar space in your deck design is a big trend for 2023. This doesn’t have to be a big area, but it should have enough room to have an outdoor refrigerator, shelves to hold drinkware, and a cabinet to store dishes for snacks. The goal is not to have to go back inside your home to get a drink or a snack.
If you plan on using your deck as a dining space, you could upgrade your bar into a mini kitchen space complete with a grill and burners for cooking. The outdoor cooking area should also have adequate prep space and a small sink to clean up. Outdoor living spaces have become incredibly popular in the last couple of years.
